Our fireplace TV wall makeover actually started with an idea I could picture in my head, but wasn't quite sure how to explain.
We had tried several different things with this wall and our TV over the years, but I was ready to finally create something that looked like it was meant to be there.
I knew I wanted a fireplace feature wall with the TV incorporated into the design, so I used AI to create an image showing my husband what I had in mind.
I basically showed him the picture and said, "This is what I want."
Then my husband and son figured out how to make it happen — and the finished wall ended up looking almost exactly like what I had pictured.

From an AI Idea to a Real Fireplace Wall
Sometimes I know what I want a space to look like long before I know how we're actually going to get there.
That was definitely the case with this wall.
Instead of trying to describe every detail, I used an AI-generated image to visualize the fireplace TV wall I had in mind. Being able to actually show my husband the idea made it much easier than trying to explain it.
From there, he and my son took over the building part. They figured out how to turn the inspiration image into something that would actually work in our living room.
Watching the wall come together and start looking like the image I had shown them was probably one of my favorite parts of the entire project.
Our Fireplace TV Wall Before the Makeover

There wasn't anything technically wrong with the wall. It was just plain, and I had been trying to figure out the best way to handle the TV and that whole side of the room for years.
At one point we had a faux fireplace. We used that for a while before eventually taking it out so we could add more seating.
We also tried hiding the TV completely. I had another idea that my husband built for me — basically a box mounted on the wall with doors that could close over the television. We could completely hide the TV when we weren't using it and open the doors when we wanted to watch it.
It worked, but after trying several different arrangements, I was ready to stop coming up with temporary solutions and finally do something with the wall that felt finished.

The finished wall completely changed the feel of the living room.
And for me, the coolest part was seeing something that started as an AI image become a real feature in our house — and look so close to what I had originally envisioned.
Building Out the Fireplace Feature Wall
This time, instead of just hanging something else on the existing wall, my husband and son built the wall out to create an actual fireplace feature wall.
That gave us enough depth to set the TV back into the new wall instead of simply mounting it on the surface. The electric fireplace could then be incorporated underneath it as part of the same design.
The result feels much more built-in and intentional than any of the previous TV setups we had tried.
Using Shiplap on the Fireplace Wall
We finished the new fireplace wall in shiplap.
I especially like that choice because we also have shiplap in our dining room. The living room and dining room are separate spaces, but repeating the same material helps the two rooms flow together.
It also gives the fireplace wall some texture without making it too busy.
Recessing the TV and Making It Look Like Artwork
After all the different ways we've tried to hide the TV over the years, I think we finally found the solution I like best.
Instead of trying to pretend the television isn't there, we made it part of the fireplace wall.
The TV sits back into the bump-out, and we added a frame around it so it looks more like a framed picture hanging above the fireplace.
When we aren't watching TV, we can use the background options on Roku to display an image on the screen. With a picture displayed and the frame around it, the television blends into the room much better than a big black screen would.
It's funny that after trying to completely hide the TV in the past, the solution I ended up liking most was simply finding a way to make it look good where it was.
Adding an Electric Fireplace Under the TV
The electric fireplace was one of the main parts of the design from the beginning.
I wanted the atmosphere and look of a real fireplace without adding a traditional wood-burning fireplace to the house.
We can turn the fireplace on just for the look of the flames, which gives the room that cozy fireplace feel, but it also has heat when we actually want to warm the room.
At night especially, having the fireplace going completely changes the atmosphere of the living room.
The Best Part Was Seeing My Idea Come to Life
I think that's what makes this one of my favorite projects we've done.
I started with an idea, used AI to turn that idea into something I could actually show my husband, and then watched him and my son figure out how to make it real.
Of course they had to figure out all of the real-world details of actually building it, but the finished result ended up surprisingly close to the original vision.
There's something pretty satisfying about looking at a picture of what you wanted and then looking across the room and actually seeing it there.
Why the Fireplace TV Wall Changed the Whole Living Room
This project ended up changing much more than one wall.
After years of moving the TV around, trying a faux fireplace, and even building something to hide the television, this finally gave that side of the room a purpose.
The fireplace wall became the focal point, the shiplap helped connect the living room to the dining room, and the recessed and framed TV finally felt like part of the design instead of something we were constantly trying to disguise.
It also gave us a starting point for updating the rest of the living room.
Updating the Rest of the Living Room
Once the fireplace wall was finished, we started changing some of the softer elements in the room too.
We added pink curtains, a rug, coordinating pillow covers and blankets, along with some smaller decorative pieces.
We also mixed in thrifted finds, including a plant and other decor, instead of buying everything new.
Those smaller changes helped soften the room and made the fireplace wall feel like part of a complete living room rather than a standalone project.
From Years of Ideas to a Wall That Finally Feels Right
I think that's why I like this project so much.
It wasn't our first idea for this wall. It came after years of trying different arrangements and figuring out what we did and didn't like.
This time, instead of finding another temporary way to deal with the TV wall, we created something that feels like it was actually meant for the room.
The combination of the shiplap wall, recessed and framed TV, and electric fireplace finally gave us the focal point I had been trying to create all along.
