Our fireplace TV wall makeover actually started with an idea I could picture in my head, but wasn't quite sure how to explain.
We had tried several different things with this wall and our TV over the years, but I was ready to finally create something that looked like it was meant to be there.
I knew I wanted a fireplace feature wall with the TV incorporated into the design, so I used AI to create an image showing my husband what I had in mind.
I basically showed him the picture and said, "This is what I want."
Then my husband and son figured out how to make it happen — and the finished wall ended up looking almost exactly like what I had pictured.

From an AI Idea to a Real Fireplace Wall
Sometimes I know what I want a space to look like long before I know how we're actually going to get there.
That was definitely the case with this wall.
Instead of trying to describe every detail, I used an AI-generated image to visualize the fireplace TV wall I had in mind. Being able to actually show my husband the idea made it much easier than trying to explain it.
From there, he and my son took over the building part. They figured out how to turn the inspiration image into something that would actually work in our living room.
The basic idea:
Build the wall out, recess the TV, frame it so it looked more like artwork, add an electric fireplace underneath, and finish the feature wall with shiplap.
Our Fireplace TV Wall Before the Makeover

There wasn't anything technically wrong with the wall. It was just plain, and I had been trying to figure out the best way to handle the TV and that whole side of the room for years.
At one point we had a faux fireplace. We used that for a while before eventually taking it out so we could add more seating.
We also tried hiding the TV completely. My husband built a box on the wall with doors that could close over the television. We could hide the TV when we weren't using it and open the doors when we wanted to watch it.
It worked, but after trying several arrangements, I was ready to stop coming up with temporary solutions and create something that actually felt finished.
Building Out the Fireplace Feature Wall
This time, instead of simply hanging something else on the existing wall, my husband and son started building the wall out to create an actual fireplace feature.
This was the point where the idea finally started becoming a real structure in the room.

The beginning of the build as the fireplace wall started taking shape.
Building the wall out gave us the depth we needed to incorporate both the TV and electric fireplace into one feature instead of simply mounting everything on the original wall.

As the build progressed, we could finally start seeing the shape of the new feature wall.

The finished wall completely changed the feel of the living room, but there were still several steps between that early framing and the final result.
Creating Space for the TV and Electric Fireplace
As the structure came together, they created dedicated spaces for both the television and the electric fireplace.
The goal was to have the TV sit back into the new wall instead of looking like it had simply been mounted on top of it.

Building the TV and fireplace into the new wall helped give the finished project a more built-in look.
The electric fireplace could then sit underneath the TV as part of the same design.
I wanted the atmosphere and look of a fireplace without adding a traditional wood-burning fireplace to the house. With our electric fireplace, we can use the flames just for the look, or turn on the heat when we actually want to warm the room.
Using Shiplap on the Fireplace Wall
We finished the new fireplace wall in shiplap.
I especially like that choice because we also used shiplap behind the table in our dining room mini makeover. Repeating the same material helps the living room and dining room flow together.

Adding shiplap was the point where the construction started looking much more like a finished feature wall.
The shiplap gives the fireplace wall texture without making it feel too busy, and it helped turn the new structure into something that looked like it belonged in the room.
Recessing the TV and Making It Look Like Artwork
After all the different ways we've tried to hide the TV over the years, I think we finally found the solution I like best.
Instead of trying to pretend the television isn't there, we made it part of the fireplace wall.
The TV sits back into the bump-out, and we added a frame around it so it looks more like a framed picture hanging above the fireplace.

Once the TV and fireplace were incorporated into the wall, the whole project started feeling much more finished.
When we aren't watching TV, we can use the background options on Roku to display an image on the screen. With a picture displayed and the frame around it, the television blends into the room much better than a big black screen would.
It's funny that after trying to completely hide the TV in the past, the solution I ended up liking most was simply finding a way to make it look good where it was.
Finishing the Fireplace Feature Wall
Once the main construction was done, it was the finishing details that really started bringing the original idea to life.

By this point, it was finally looking like the fireplace wall I had originally pictured.
My favorite part of this project?
Seeing an idea I had pictured in my head turn into something my husband and son actually built — and realizing the finished wall looked surprisingly close to what I had envisioned.

There's something pretty satisfying about looking at a picture of what you wanted and then looking across the room and actually seeing it there.
At night especially, having the fireplace going completely changes the atmosphere of the living room.
Why the Fireplace TV Wall Changed the Whole Living Room
This project ended up changing much more than one wall.
After years of moving the TV around, trying a faux fireplace, and even building something to hide the television, this finally gave that side of the room a purpose.
The fireplace wall became the focal point, the shiplap helped connect the living room to the dining room, and the recessed and framed TV finally felt like part of the design instead of something we were constantly trying to disguise.
It also gave us the starting point for our full living room makeover.
Updating the Rest of the Living Room
Once the fireplace wall was finished, we started changing some of the softer elements in the room too.
We added pink curtains, a rug, coordinating pillow covers and blankets, along with some smaller decorative pieces.
We also mixed in thrifted finds, including a plant and other decor, instead of buying everything new.

From Years of Ideas to a Wall That Finally Feels Right
This wasn't our first idea for the wall. It came after years of trying different arrangements and figuring out what we did and didn't like.
This time, instead of finding another temporary way to deal with the TV wall, we created something that feels like it was actually meant for the room.
The combination of the shiplap wall, recessed and framed TV, and electric fireplace finally gave us the focal point I had been trying to create all along.
