Would you paint a living room ceiling black?
It's definitely not the safest design choice, but in our sunken living room, we decided to go for it.
Instead of treating the ceiling as something that needed to disappear, we made it part of the design — and it completely changed the feel of the room.
Black ceiling: yay or nay?
This one definitely gets people talking. 🖤
Our Sunken Living Room
A sunken living room already has something that makes it different from a standard living space.
Rather than trying to make ours look like every other room, we decided to lean into that character and make some bolder choices.
One of the biggest was painting the ceiling black.

Would you have been brave enough to paint it black?
Why Paint a Living Room Ceiling Black?
White ceilings are the default in most homes, which is exactly why changing the ceiling color can have such a big impact.
A black ceiling immediately becomes part of the room instead of simply fading into the background.
In this space, I like that it gives the room a more dramatic look and helps make the sunken living room feel like its own distinct area.
The Sunken Living Room Before
Before we painted it, the ceiling blended in much more with the rest of the room.
There was nothing necessarily wrong with keeping it light, but once we started making changes to the space, I felt like the ceiling was an opportunity to do something a little more interesting.
Before: Our sunken living room before we painted the ceiling black.
And After We Painted It Black
The difference surprised me even though I knew what we were doing.
Once the ceiling was black, it felt much more connected to the overall design of the room instead of simply being the surface above everything else.
It also emphasized the fact that this is a sunken living room and helped make the space feel like its own distinct part of the house.
After: The finished sunken living room with its black ceiling.
The before and after really shows it:
Changing only the ceiling color can have a much bigger impact on a room than you might expect.
Will a Black Ceiling Make a Room Feel Smaller?
This is probably one of the first concerns people have when they think about using such a dark color overhead.
Dark colors can visually change how a room feels, which is why I wouldn't automatically paint every ceiling in a house black.
But I also don't think a rule that says ceilings always have to be white makes sense for every space.
Sometimes you have to look at the individual room and decide what works there.
For our sunken living room, I like the darker ceiling because it makes the room feel more defined and intentional.
Would I use a black ceiling everywhere?
No. But that's kind of the point. A design choice doesn't have to work in every room to be the right choice for one room.
Using the Ceiling as Part of the Design
Ceilings are easy to overlook during a renovation.
We spend so much time choosing flooring, wall colors, furniture, lighting and everything else that the ceiling often just stays white because that's what we're used to seeing.
But it doesn't have to.
A ceiling can be another design element just like a wall.
In our sunken living room, painting it black gave the room something unexpected without needing to add another piece of furniture or decoration.
Why I Like Bold Choices in Older Homes
One thing I enjoy about working on homes with character is that I don't feel like every room needs to follow the safest current trend.
Sometimes an unusual feature is exactly what makes a room interesting.
Our sunken living room already had its own personality because of the change in floor level, so a more dramatic ceiling felt right for this particular space.
I like mixing those older architectural features with updates that make the house feel fresh without taking away everything that makes it different.
A Black Ceiling Isn't Going to Be for Everyone
I already know some people would walk into this room and immediately want to paint the ceiling white again. 😂
And that's okay.
Some people love light, bright rooms. Other people like darker and more dramatic spaces.
That's actually one of my favorite things about sharing renovations — everyone has an opinion about what they would have done differently.
I would rather make choices that give our spaces personality than choose everything based only on what the largest number of people would consider safe.
Would I Paint a Ceiling Black Again?
In the right room, absolutely.
I wouldn't start painting every ceiling in the house black, but this project definitely made me more open to treating ceilings as part of the design instead of automatically reaching for white paint.
And when I look at the before and after of this sunken living room, I'm glad we went with the darker ceiling.
Now I want to know what you would do.
