I know crystal isn't everyone's style, but I still love it.
I've used crystal lighting and fixtures in several of our renovations because I think it adds a little bit of elegance without necessarily making a space feel overly formal.
But I know some people see crystal and immediately think dated.
Crystal: timeless or dated?
I already know my answer. 😂
Why I Still Use Crystal
For me, crystal is one of those details that can make a room feel a little more finished.
I've used crystal chandeliers, crystal-style light fixtures and even fandeliers in different renovations over the years.
I like the way it catches the light, and I think it can add a touch of class without having to completely change the rest of the room.
The key, at least for me, is choosing a fixture that still feels updated.

Crystal Doesn't Have to Feel Old-Fashioned
I think a lot of the debate comes down to the style of the fixture itself.
There are definitely crystal lights that can feel very traditional, but there are also plenty of newer designs that mix crystal with black, gold or more modern shapes.
Those are usually the ones I gravitate toward.
I like having that little bit of sparkle while still keeping the overall room more current.
My take:
Crystal can absolutely still work — I think it just depends on how you use it and what you pair it with.
Where We've Used Crystal
I've worked crystal into several different types of spaces and fixtures, including:
- Dining room chandeliers
- Crystal fandeliers
- Ceiling lights
- Decorative fixtures
- Other small crystal accents
I don't necessarily make the whole room crystal-themed.
I usually like using one statement piece and letting that be the part that stands out.
Crystal Chandeliers and Fandeliers
Two of my favorite ways to use crystal are chandeliers and fandeliers.
A chandelier can completely change the feel of a dining room, while a fandelier gives you the decorative look of a chandelier with the practicality of a ceiling fan.
You can see more of the crystal chandelier we used in one of our renovations in our black crystal dining room chandelier post.
My Crystal Finds
Since I've used so many crystal pieces over the years, I put together a list of crystal finds and ideas for anyone who likes the look too.
So... Timeless or Dated?
I think crystal can still be timeless when it's used in the right way.
But I also know this is one of those design choices people tend to have strong opinions about.
Some people love the sparkle.
Some people want absolutely nothing to do with it.
I'm still firmly on the crystal side.
What do you think — crystal: timeless or dated?
I'd still put it in another renovation.
