Should I Restore or Paint This Vintage Stereo Console? Walnut vs. Raspberry Pink

I need help deciding what to do with one of my many unfinished projects! This old stereo console came from a house we were working on. There was a bunch of old furniture there, and I had my husband bring this piece home because I knew I wanted to do something with it.

It's one of those old cabinets with a radio, record player, and speakers. I love that it's more than just a regular piece of furniture, but I still haven't decided what to do with the outside.

So here it sits, waiting for its makeover. I'm actually using it as decoration in the meantime, even though it doesn't look all that great right now. 😂

Here's What the Stereo Console Looks Like Now

This is the actual console as it looks today. It's definitely a project, but I can see the potential!

I Already Bought Pink Paint...But Now I'm Second-Guessing It

I actually bought raspberry pink paint for this cabinet. I thought a bold color would be fun, and I was ready to give it a completely different look.

But then I started thinking about restoring the wood instead. Now I can't decide whether I want to bring back that warm wood finish or go for the pink color pop I originally planned.

So I made a few design mockups to help me picture both options before I start.

Restore the Wood or Paint It Pink?

Two possible looks for the console. These are design mockups, not finished makeover photos.

Option 1: Restore the Wood

The first option is to restore the cabinet and give the wood a rich, warm walnut look. I like the idea of keeping the vintage character of the piece, especially since it's an old radio and record player console.

If I go this route, I'm considering a walnut wood stain to bring out a warmer wood tone.

Here's what I'm picturing if I choose to restore it:

Option 2: Give It a Raspberry Pink Color Pop

Then there's the pink paint I already bought! A raspberry pink finish would give this old console a much bolder look.

I love adding unexpected color to a room, so this option is still tempting. But once I pictured the restored wood, I wasn't quite as sure about painting it.

The Project Is Still Waiting for Me!

Whichever finish I choose, I know I'll need to spend some time getting this old piece ready. I've been looking at this electric sander for the project.

For now, though, I'm still using the console as decoration while I decide what to do with it. One of these days I'll finally tackle this unfinished project! 😂
