Bathroom Makeover Before and After: From Dated to Modern Vintage

Sometimes you have to look past what a room looks like right now and imagine what it could become.

This bathroom was definitely one of those spaces.

It needed a major update, but instead of trying to make it look completely new and modern, we wanted the finished bathroom to still have some character. The result is one of those before-and-afters that makes me forget just how different the room looked when we started.

Could you see the potential in this bathroom?

Sometimes the rooms that need the most work make the best before-and-afters.

The Bathroom Before

The original bathroom was dated and needed much more than a few decorative changes.

When you're standing in the middle of a room like this, it can be hard to picture the finished result. But that's also one of my favorite parts of renovating — looking at what is there and figuring out what the space could become.

We knew we wanted to update the bathroom while still giving the finished room some personality rather than making everything feel plain or generic.

Updating the Bathroom Without Losing Character

I like rooms that feel updated without looking like every bit of their original personality has been removed.

That's a style you'll see in a lot of our renovations. I like mixing older character with newer finishes so a room feels fresh but still interesting.

For this bathroom, the goal wasn't simply to make everything look newer. We wanted all of the choices to work together and create a finished space that felt intentional.

Creating a Modern Vintage Look

I've realized that "modern vintage" is probably one of the easiest ways to describe a lot of the spaces I like.

I love taking inspiration from older homes and vintage details and mixing them with practical updates that make sense for how we live today.

That gives us room to use interesting tile, fixtures, hardware and other details without making the finished room feel like we're trying to recreate a bathroom from decades ago.

My favorite kind of renovation:

Keep the character, improve the function and make the whole space feel like it belongs together.

The Details Make the Difference

A bathroom isn't a huge room, which means every choice gets noticed.

The vanity, flooring, tile, lighting, mirror, fixtures and hardware all contribute to the finished look.

That's also why I like looking back at renovation photos. You don't always notice how much all those individual decisions changed a room until you compare the finished bathroom with the original one.

Seeing the Finished Bathroom

The before-and-after comparison is probably my favorite part.

When you're actually doing a renovation, you're focused on whatever needs to happen next. There is always another decision to make or another part of the project that needs attention.

Then you finally get to look back at the original room and realize just how far it came.

That's exactly how I feel about this bathroom.

The difference is pretty dramatic.

Seeing the original bathroom next to the finished space is what really shows how much all of those individual renovation decisions added up.

Why I Like Mixing Modern and Vintage

I don't necessarily want an older space to look like it was built yesterday.

I like keeping some of that sense of character while updating the things that need to function better and making the room feel fresh again.

That mix gives us more freedom to choose things because we genuinely like them instead of feeling like every finish has to match whatever happens to be the biggest trend at the moment.

Would I Do It Again?

Absolutely.

I love a dramatic before-and-after, but I especially like when the finished room still feels interesting instead of looking like every other newly renovated bathroom.

This bathroom feels updated, but it still has personality — which was exactly what we wanted.

Would you have seen the potential?

And which do you prefer for a bathroom — completely modern or a mix of modern and vintage?
